The 5 Best Tips & Tools for Working from a Coffee Shop

Published about 1 year ago • 3 min read

Happy Sunday!

Last week I put out a poll, asking people if they felt they worked efficiently from coffee shops. The majority of people said no.

This week I want to give you 5 tips and tools to help you get your best work done from your local coffee shop.

Let's get started.

1. Bring the Right Gear:

Have a gear list on your phone to remember what to bring with you. My list has:

  • Laptop
  • Phone
  • Chargers
  • Water-bottle
  • Headphones
  • Pen/pencil
  • Notepad

When you’re at the cafe, update your list with what else you needed for next time. Keep updating the list as necessary.

Bonus: Dress professionally. You'll take your work more seriously.

2. Know When to Go:

It's incredibly frustrating to get to your coffee shop, only to find that it's completely full and that there's nowhere to sit and work. To avoid this, you want to get there EARLY. The best time? 5 minutes after they open - when it's still quiet and all the good seats with the outlets are open.

Also, try to avoid arriving at peak hours. These tend to be meal times and commuting hours.

Bonus: Pick a table to return to each time. Sitting there will have familiarity which will help you get "into the zone".

3. Have a Focus Playlist:

There is nothing more distracting than the loud conversation at the next table, so it's important to have your headphones and a go-to focus playlist. You can either look one up or make your own. I recommend Lofi Beats or White Noise.

4. How a Workflow Routine:

Sometimes when we sit down to do work at a cafe, it can be difficult to get in the flow of things. Having a go-to workflow routine will help you know exactly where to start. Below is a workflow routine you can try.

Workflow Routine:

  • Prepare your space for minimal distraction.
  • Check email and/ or work-related messages (urgent tasks)
  • Brain dump all possible session goals (5 mins)
  • Out of that list, circle the 3 most important. Those are your session goals for the day.
  • Start a timer for 50 minutes of work followed by 10 min break
  • Repeat until the time is up or you have completed all 3 session goals.
  • Review the session. Ask yourself what went well and how the session could be improved for tomorrow.

5. Work with a Timer:

Try to work using the Pomodoro Method. This means setting a timer and completing a 50-minute work sprint followed by a 10-minute break.

During your work sprint try to focus on one task or goal and avoid getting up.

That's all from me!

Have a great week & catch you next Sunday.

- Olly
